Prek Thnort was the name of the asylum for the mentally ill in Cambodia before Pol Pot regime. It was the only hospital for the mentally ill in the whole country. The hospital was known by its name because of the river by name Prek Thnort, that flows through Takhmau town. The hospital had in patient facility, place for violent patients and a room for electro-convulsive therapy.
Apparently during the Pol Pot ear, this hospital was used as a prison. Later in the year 1979, this hospital was reopened under the name Chey Chumnnass Hospital (Victory Hospital). Now it is the referral hospital for the Kandal province offering medical, pediatric, surgical, and maternity services. There is an in patient unit for clients suffering from tuberculosis.
There is also a Center for Child Mental Health which was established with the blessing of His Majesty The King Preah Norodom Sihanouk in the year 1995 at the Chey Chumnass hospital, Thakhmau town, Kandal province. The center serves the needs of the mentally handicappedand psychologically affected children from 7:30 to 12:00 in the forenoon and 2 to 4:30 in the afternoon, from Monday to Friday. The activities of the center are varied and many.
Everyday from 9:00 to 12:00 and 2 to 4:30, the center offers consultations to the clients. Play therapy, behavior therapy, Family and Individual counseling and Development promotion activities are some of the therapies offered at the center other than medication. Psycho-educational and multi-modal intervention is the principle approach to therapy at the center. About 15 to 20 families are consulted by the center staff everyday. About 40% of them are from Phnom Penh, 20 to 30% from Kandal province and the rest are from eight provinces around Phnom Penh and Kandal province.
